About Us

Live Oakes Educational Theater is dedicated to combining scholarly research with acting expertise to bring history to life. Since 1994 our mission has been to inspire our audiences with stories from the past that make a difference for the future. Our goal as teachers is to train students to be self-confident, powerful communicators. We have performed at the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society, the California Historical Society, the San Francisco Maritime National  Historical Park, Jack London State Historic Park, the Oakland Museum of California History, conferences, universities, theaters, and schools throughout California.

We are seasoned professional actor/scholars, with a life-long commitment to educational theatre. Most touring troupes send you amateur actors who merely memorize lines.  We research, write, and perform our own shows. We bring history alive by engaging audiences in dialogue, discussion and debate with historical characters. We really know our subjects!

Artistic Director Michael Oakes has been acting, directing, and writing for over twenty years.  He trained at A.C.T. and performs with Equity theatres throughout the Bay Area.  He has taught and directed youth programs with Marin Theater Company, the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Marin Shakespeare Festival, Kids On Camera, Yes!, Kiddo, and has worked as an Artist in Residence through Youth in Arts, Vector Theater Company, and Young Audiences.  A native New Yorker, Mr. Oakes earned both his bachelors and masters degrees at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Renee Oakes, our Managing Producer, is a classically trained soprano and a leading North Bay actress.  She has directed youth drama with Solano Youth Theater, Vector Theater Company, Yes!, and Novato Park and Recreation.  She is also a skilled executive administrator.
