The Big Read

Michael Oakes is a union actor, a professional director and writer, a lay historian, and one of the premiere Big Read performers in the country. He can answer questions in character, engaging audiences in civil civic discourse with historical figures. It is a magical form of time travel. He has done thousands of performances, receiving rave reviews at theaters, National and State Historic Parks, Historical Societies, Museums, schools, Ren. Fairs, conferences, and libraries across the country.

Our shows include Big Read authors F. Scott Fitzgerald, Jack London, John Steinbeck, and Edgar Allan Poe.  Many communities incorporate our programs into their grant applications. We have had great success getting funded, as the NEA is familiar with our programs, which have earned universal praise from our Big Read clients. We are happy to provide references.

Our fees:

  $695 per 30-45 min. daytime school/library performance

  $1,500 per 60-120 min. evening/public event

                       Perfect for Kickoff/Closing/Special Events.

+ travel costs, which vary by location and length of stay

Estimated Travel Costs include (if applicable) transfers, airfare, rental car, gas, food, lodging, travel time.

$100 over 100 miles from Vallejo, CA.

$150, over 200 miles from Vallejo within CA.

   $500-$750 to neighboring states.

   $1,000 to the Midwest.

$1,500 to the South, East, HI and AK.

   $150 for each additional day.

We can charge a flat fee in this range, and arrange all our own travel.  Or, you can make the arrangements, soliciting sponsors to donate an airline ticket, lodging, meals, or rental car.  I am also happy to be “hosted” - picked up, put up, and fed by the community, to make new friends, and help you get the biggest bang for your Big Read buck!

We can do 1-3 shows a day and stay for one or two weeks, touring to outlying schools, libraries, and communities, or come for one day.

We can tailor each performance to the audience age and desired length. Most Big Read shows are best for grade 3 to adults.

We provide publicity photos, press releases, radio interviews, local or Cable Access TV appearances, and allow the show to be broadcast or streamed, at no additional fee.
